Donovan Leadership

Who knows where the time goes?[1]

Is your year already fast disappearing?  Are you worried that your time gets taken up by the ‘stuff’ that is coming at you every day?

Without a clear set of priorities, it is likely that 2015 will quickly disappear.  Of course there is never enough time to do everything.  But, we will make time for things that are high priority.

For example, last week I took a few days out to help my son relocate to NSW.  There were lots of other demands on my time, but family always has the highest priority for me.  Of course I had to adjust my schedule, cancel some things, move some commitments to later etc. But the reward of seeing him set up for success made it all worthwhile.

You are up to big things as a leader, so no doubt your calendar is already full.  There is no point waiting for a gap to appear.  Once you do allocate time to your priorities, you will have to drop things off your schedule that are not as important.  Better still, you can move some items off your plate and create leadership opportunities for others.

So, what is worth prioritising this year?  What would make the biggest difference to producing the results you are after this year?

I believe that building the leadership capability of those around you is a high priority.  It is an investment in the future.  It will eventually get you off the rat wheel of constant ‘busyness’ and save you time.

Building the leadership capability of those around you will also expand your influence.  It will enable you to produce bigger and more sustainable results.  In the long run, it will free you up to focus on changing the game, which is the essential distinction of leadership in my view.

Are you prioritising building a world-class leadership team in 2015?

“Time management is an oxymoron. Time is beyond our control, and the clock keeps ticking regardless of how we lead our lives. Priority management is the answer to maximizing the time we have.”
